In high school, prom was the main event of senior year. For months, girls would plan and prepare by eating right and working out in order to look their best for their night. Flash forward to your engagement. Suddenly, you find yourself prepping and planning in the same way – this time for the man of your dreams! Before you begin counting calories and buying that fancy juice cleanse, check out these guidelines for how to stay healthy and tone up the right way.

It is known that slow changes to your diet and exercise routine create habits that you are more likely to maintain for a longer period of time. For this reason, the sooner you start becoming healthier and making good choices, the better! Start by eliminating (for the most part) junk foods and sodas. Or course, you can taste test your cake choices, but limit the amount of sugar and saturated fats you intake. For those of us with a sugar tooth, turn to sweet fruits like watermelon and pineapple instead of candy. The natural sugar will take longer for your body to digest, which means you won’t get a sugar high or feel the nasty effects of a sugar crash.

Another great habit to add is drinking more water than you regularly do. This will allow your body to naturally detox toxins and fat, while also boosting your metabolism! Getting enough sleep is vital for your body to re-energize, and even helps to give you glowing skin. Planning ahead is also very important and will keep you motivated and on track to reach your goals. Have plenty of healthy snacks on hand, and if you don’t have time to make dinners, spend a few hours on Sunday nights to prep and plan your meals for the week. This will keep you stress free during the week!

If you’re in a time crunch a few months before your wedding, consider following a plan such as Whole30 or eating Paleo to help you quickly tone up. Remember that these plans are challenging, and must be taken seriously in order to achieve results! If you cannot commit to a time-consuming prep plan, focus on the choices you are able to make.  Order meals that are grilled or sautéed if you have to eat at restaurants, rather than meals that are fried. Switch your Frappuccino for a skinny latté. Those little treats add up, and you’ll be surprised how quickly your body changes when you give them up!

Overall, when you are trying to lose weight and tone up for your wedding day, it is important to consider your situation and your body’s needs. Depending on the amount of time you have, you may be able to cook healthy meals and exercise during the week – but, if you don’t have that much time, remember to change the little things and you’ll get a big result.
